REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA PENNSYLVANIA LONGRIFLE SIGNED G. SCHROYER W/ORNATE RAISED CARVED STOCK.
Description: REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA PENNSYLVANIA LONGRIFLE SIGNED G. SCHROYER W/ORNATE RAISED CARVED STOCK. Circa 1780 unrestored recently found rifle by the most famous early York School maker, George Schroyer, and signed with his script signature on the barrel.. Although the octagon/round barrel has been shortened to 33” and the lock changed to percussion this is one of Schroyer’s more ornately carved rifles. Of particular note is the raised carved 13” panels along the forend from the ramrod thimble forward. Has fine relief carving about the barrel tang, on the butt and wrist and on the underside of the forend. Early style beavertail carving about the lock and side plate. The wood still has the old lightly worn original patinated finish and the brass mounts and patchbox a nice umber colored dark patina. Still has the original side plate and toe plate. Although needing restoration the condition and quality of this rifle make it well worth while. George Schroyer started making rifles in the late 1750’s. He died in 1818. SOLD Antique: Yes |
