S. Hawken 40 caliber Plains Rifle
Description: Here is a really nice, fully functional antique plains rifle from the mid-1800s. In looking it over I cleared some of the patina in front of the rear sight and found it signed "S. Hawken St. Louis". There is no Provence for this rifle, so I do not know of its authenticity therefore I am pricing to reflect this. There are well-done repairs and replacements to the wood and metal. This is a very functional rifle and if I have time I will take it to the range, fire it at some targets, and post to this listing. If anyone is interested in this piece and requests a test-fire, I will oblige. The lock works perfectly and will hold on half-cock. It has an octagon, swamped 32" barrel in approximately .40 caliber, double set triggers, and comes with the original ramrod which looks to be hickory. The stock is walnut with a few well-done repairs and less than the usual dents and damage. Original sights with silver blade front sight. Brass furniture with pewter end cap. The barrel has a hook breech with a wedge to fasten the barrel to the stock. Very handy for removing the barrel to clean. The butt plate has an old crack that is period repaired with an additional screw (see pics). The bore is dark and has decent rifling for the age and is very shootable. I offer a 3 day inspection period and will accept this rifle returned for any reason as long as it is returned undamaged, unfired, and unaltered and refund the price you paid. Any charges for return shipping and insurance is the responsibility of the customer. .I welcome all comments and feedback. Thanks for looking.
