Here we have a unique Savage R.F.A Co. Civil War .58 cal percussion rifle manufactured in 1863. It has N.J. stamped on the Stock and also a faint N.J.on the barrel. The "N.J." stamp on the stock (and often barrel) of a Savage Model 1863 rifled musket signifies it was a U.S. government contract musket supplied to New Jersey for its militia during the Civil War, indicating state acceptance and issue, making it a notable piece of Civil War history. These rifles, made under contract by Savage R.F.A. Co., feature "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. MIDDLETOWN, CT." markings and government proof marks (V, P, eagle head). This Musket represents a crucial period of Northern arms manufacturing and state mobilization during the Civil War, with many appearing in excellent condition still today.
