“J.D.” SIGNED Kentucky Style HOMESTEAD Long Rifle

Here we present an antique Silver Inlaid and Engraved Jacob Deemer Full Stock Percussion Conversion Long Rifle, made circa the early-1800s. This rifle likely began its life as a flintlock, later converted to a percussion firing system after that technology was introduced. Crafted in the Easton area of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, it is attributed to Jacob Deemer. Born in Bucks County on May 4, 1806, Deemer lived until April 27, 1870, passing away in Durham, Bucks County. It's believed that he apprenticed under Nicholas Hawk from Gilbert, Pennsylvania.

This rifle shares several similarities with Hawk’s work, especially in its decorative engravings on the brass fittings and the distinctive design of its gunstock. The stock is made from curly maple with dark diagonal stripes set against a lighter brown background, complemented by silver inlays that add to its elegance.

A main feature that draws the eye sturdy is an octagonal barrel chambered in .44 caliber—powerful enough for small to medium game or for defending the homestead. During the mid to late 1800s, rifle manufacturing was transitioning rapidly. Many guns were still crafted by individual artisans across the United States and frontier regions, but the rise of large factories with assembly lines was beginning to change the industry. Unfortunately, over time, many of the makers' names—especially those of the so-called Kentucky long rifles—have been lost to history. This piece stands as a fine example of that bygone era.

The overall condition is good. The action functions, but the trigger spring is weak. Traces of silver finish remain on the cheek rest emblem. Brown and dark patinas intermixed on the barrel. The maple stock is solid, being refinished, with stable cracks under the muzzle. Good, darkened bore. The stock is repaired just ahead of the lock and has a small crack north of the left sideplate. Most markings are legible, but some are partially obfuscated. The barrel is signed “J.D.”
