TWIN HEARTS 1840s Henry ELWELL-REMINGTON LONG RIFLE Ilion, New York Antique Pre-Civil War Pennsylvania / Kentucky Plains Rifle
Description: TWIN HEARTS 1840s Henry ELWELL-REMINGTON LONG RIFLE Ilion, New York Antique Pre-Civil War Pennsylvania / Kentucky Plains Rifle Here we present an antique Henry Elwell/Remington Half-Stock Long Rifle made circa the mid-1800s. The lock is marked “H. ELWELL/WARRANTED”. Henry Elwell was a lock maker in the early to mid-19th century. The octagon barrel is marked “REMINGTON” on the left barrel flat, partially covered by the stock. The barrel is octagonal and 36” in length with a .32 caliber bore set in a half-length stock. Inlaid cheek piece on the left for a right-handed shooter. Double set trigger. Open, barrel mounted sights. Brass hardware with German silver décor. Stock is capped in pewter. The American Long Rifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” The overall condition is good. Original patina. The action is strong, set trigger must be activated first. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The barrel wedge is absent. The stock is solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36 1/4 inches Caliber: .32 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
