TYRON Half Stock .40 Caliber American LONG RIFLE ELK COUNTY, Pa. Style Manufactured by “TYRON of Philadelphia”
Description: TYRON Half Stock .40 Caliber American LONG RIFLE ELK COUNTY, Pa. Style Manufactured by “TYRON of Philadelphia” Here we present an antique Half-Stock Back Action Long Rifle, made circa the 1850s by Edward Tyron of Philadelphia, PA. The Tyron family business started in the early 1700s with a merchant from Holland bringing arms and Indian trade goods for sale into this "New Country" and continued for over 150 years. The business prospered as a gun and gun parts dealer in the early 1800s and evolved into a leading wholesale house and hardware store in the early twentieth century. The Tryon story is important to collectors because it was in the center of the gun trade in our new country and, more specifically, in the Philadelphia area. The picture of Tryon as a gun maker is often clouded by Tryon's hardware store image of the late 1800s and the 1900s. The sale of imported and brand-name arms during this later period led many to consider Tryon merely another early Sears and Roebuck or Montgomery Ward with arms as a side line, when he was actually one of the leading gunmakers of high quality guns in the mid-1800s. This rifle features a J. Goulcher marked lock. The top of the barrel is marked “TRYON” and “PHILADA”. It bears a fancy patch box set into the right side of the stock. The maple stock has very nice grain. The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are dark with age. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape. The butt plate stops short of the toe and there is a somewhat crude strap that has been mounted to the bottom of the stock there. The bore is dark and dusty with deep rifling. The action remains excellent. Here is a good-looking gun that would have been a game-getter for the table and a measure of protection for the homestead in mid-19th Century America. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 41 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
