Very Interesting Vermont Target Rifle by Asa Story w/ Remington Barrel & External Mechanism
Description:
NSN, .38 Caliber, 28 3/4" heavy octagon barrel with a very good bore that has mild freckling within the grooves. This is a well-made and handsome rifle that utilizes a distinctive, external mechanism percussion lock, almost identical in construction to those invented and built by Herkimer, NY, maker Wyllys Avery. The barrel itself has an overall gray patina with scattered specks of plum-brown freckling scattered throughout. The top right barrel flat has a faint, but still legible "REMINGTON" marking at the breech, with "A. STORY / WINDSOR VT." on the top flat just ahead of the rear sight dovetail. The lock, as stated previously, is of the external mechanism type; with an exposed mainspring much like those found on miquelet locks, and a thick plate covering the sear mechanism behind the hammer. The cover plate is stamped "D. LOCKE" on the face and the lock is mated to a fully functional double-set trigger. The wedge-fastened stock has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout, as well as some mild wear to the oil finish along the wrist. The brass and German silver inlays are excellent and mostly unadorned, but the oval plaque on the left side of the buttstock has a nicely engraved American Eagle with floral border. These distinctive locks had the advantage of not requiring a great deal of wood removal for lock inletting, thus reducing any potential weakening of the stock at wrist. These rarely seen locks are a very interesting footnote to the development of the American percussion target rifle, and this example rates very good-near fine condition overall. Antique;
