"Very Rare Merrill, Latrobe, Thomas Sporting Rifle. (AL4795)
Description: "Very Rare Merrill, Latrobe, Thomas Sporting Rifle. Very rare rifle with faucet breech. Top of breech marked “Jas. H. Merrill, Baltimore Patented 1856". Rifle features the Merrill patent faucet breech and loading lever with charging apparatus under the lever. There is a hole in the trigger guard finial which allows the fired paper cartridge to fall out the bottom. Barrel length of 29½" (muzzle to end of the barrel at the breech). Bore has strong rifling and some light pits. The rifle is very good plus to excellent overall. Rifle has adjustable double set triggers. Checkering in stock is excellent. We believe this rifle to be the patent model and prototype. Later examples have different features which are likely different evolutionary additions or changes. Caliber is approximately .40 and 29½" barrel, neither seen on other later Merrill examples. Additional information from an article from Arms Heritage magazine is included and shows a schematic drawing of the 1856 patent. A rare find! Price: $9,750.00 Antique: Yes Contact Seller |
