1882 Royal Enfield Martini Custom S.M.R.C. Special .22 Target Rifle
** Converted for Society Of Miniature Rifle Clubs in England **
Description: This is a very cool antique Enfield Martini British Military rifle converted to .22 caliber by the C.G. Bonehill firm in Birmingham England for the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs. This single-shot lever-action target rifle features a 30 & 3/16ths inch barrel with a ladder-style rear sight and ramped front blade and a custom checkered Walnut stock set with 2 barrel bands and a metal buttplate. This was a very high quality custom target rifle in it's day and was probably one of this club's prized possesions. The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs was founded in 1901 by senior military men, politicians, and senior civilian marksmen as an English civilian shootinganisation that held small bore matches and encouraged the civilian population to become proficient marksman. The S.M.R.C. was incorporated into the National Small-bore Rifle Association (N.S.R.A.) in 1947, which remains in existence in England even today. As you can see from the pictures, this customized Martini has traces of the original blue finish remaining but shows mostly a brown/blue patina on the metal parts. The bore in this rifle is dark but still shows strong rifling, good for a rifle from this time period when .22 ammunition was still black powder. The Walnut stock set with hand-cut checkering shows some handling marks and some small professional repairs, but still has a very attractive look to it. Of particular note, the top of the wrist shows a plug repair where a tang-type sight was mounted that is nearly seamless, checkered-in just like the original wrist pattern, this took great skill and care and is indicative of the top quality workmanship on this rifle. All of the mechanics on this rifle are in good working order and the rifle locks up perfcetly. We have no doubt that it should be a fun toy at the range or farm if the new owner so chooses. This is very neat antique rifle with a lot of British and military history behind it. This rifle would be an excellent addition to any small-bore rifle collection, and because it is an antique can be shipped directly to the buyer.
