Here we present an antique Massachusetts Arms Company Single Shot Maynard Patent Model 1873 Centerfire Rifle, made by the Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts with a production run between 1873 and 1882. The Maynard rifle was developed by Edward Maynard. Maynard, a New Jersey dentist, lent his talents to developing a new primer system for guns which allowed for faster reloading of flintlock muskets. The system was intended to make up for the poor results for this style of muskets. The Maynard Carbine would go on to be a primary weapon during the American Civil War

Maynard Patent Single Shot rifles were manufactured from 1863 to 1890. The Model 1873 was the first Maynard with standard chambering for centerfire metallic cartridges. These rifles are very similar in appearance to the percussion model, with a slightly offset hammer and a firing pin contained within the bolster on the recoil shield in place of the percussion nipple. The most distinguishing thing about these rifles is the wide gap between the breech of the barrel and the recoil shield, which allows for the thick rimmed brass cartridge, known as the “thick Maynard” by collectors. The Model 1882 rifles have a much smaller gap and used standard ammunition having thinner and smaller diameter rims. The 1873 and 1882 model rifles were made in a variety of sizes and calibers from the No. 1 Gallery rifle in .22 rimfire to the No. 14 Long-Range Creedmoor Rifle in .44-100 and the No. 16 Improved Target rifle in calibers ranging from .22 to .40-70. 

Maynard received his first patent in 1845 with the priming system which cycled a small mercury fulminate charge to a percussion cap. This invention turned out to be successful, and the United States Federal Government offered a dollar per weapon to produce them using his method. By 1855 all 1855 model .58 caliber military rifles and carbines were using Maynard's method. In 1851 Maynard patented a breech-loading rifle. During the Civil War, the Confederacy took to this method particularly because it did not require the major manufacturing equipment used for most gun production. Maynard founded the Maynard Arms Company in 1857, contracting the Massachusetts Arms Company to manufacture the Maynard Carbines. The Maynard was one of the few patent breech-loaders to survive the Civil War. It continued to be produced for hunting and target shooting until the mid-1890s.

The overall condition is fine. Much original blue finish remains. The stock is fine with minor scuffs and dings. Mirror bright bore with sharp rifling. The action is strong. The markings are legible.
