Case William Kavanaugh & Son, Dublin single shot hunting rifle. Overall length is approximately 41½". The 26" octagon barrel has a matted top flat. The bore is approximately .30 caliber and it appears to take an approximately 1.2" straight case. The bore is very good with some pitting toward the chamber. Barrel has approximately 90% blue/brown finish. The action, which is nicely engraved, is gray steel with traces of original colors. The action is opened with the side lever. Serial number, 8502, is matching on the action and barrel. There is a round silver escutcheon on the bottom of the stock that reads “RGW/ from/ CSB". The buttstock is fine with a nicely checkered wrist and most of the original finish. The forend is good with an ebony tip, worn checkering, and a small missing piece at the rear left. Buttstock is fine. The action functions correctly. The green felt lined leather case label reads “William Kavanaugh & Son/ Gun & Rifle/ Manufactures/ 12 Dame St./ Dublin". Kavanaugh operated in Dublin as early as 1830. The fire single shot rifle is marked “W. Kavanaugh & Son Dublin" in a oval on the left side of the receiver and “W. Kavanaugh & Son/ 12 Dame St. Dublin" on the right and left barrel flats. The 3-leaft rear sight is graduated at 50, 100, and 150 yards. This is a very nice single shot Irish hunting rifle.
