Here Ancestry Guns presents a rare antique Remington-Beals Single Shot Breech Loading Rifle, made circa 1866-67 in Ilion, New York. Fordyce Beals invented this single shot, breech-loading rifle that would bear his name. The breech of this rifle is opened by lowering the under-lever, which slides the barrel forward, not unlike the Gallager and Maynard Carbines of the American Civil War. Two chamberings of this rifle were made during its production run between 1866 and 1870 in .32 Long rimfire and .38 Long rimfire. Both iron (early production) and brass-framed receivers were made. There were fewer than 800 of these made during their five year production run. Annie Oakley, who performed in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and arguably America’s greatest sharpshooter, shot a Remington Beals rifle when she performed!
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel is preserved on the frame with a nice dark plum patina on the barrel. Excellent action. The bore has dimmed slightly but remains bright with sharp rifling. Markings are sharp. Fine stock. Intact rear folding sight. Here is a true scarcity by Remington and the choice of one of the world’s most renowned trick shooters!
