Offered here for sale and just acquired is a scarce 19th-century Flobert .32-caliber cadet rifle. Flobert rifles were early metallic-cartridge rimfire firearms based on the ammunition developed by French inventor Louis-Nicolas Flobert in the mid-19th century. Flobert’s original design was essentially a percussion cap with a bullet attached — the first practical rimfire cartridge — and it led to a variety of small-bore gallery/parlor rifles designed for target shooting at short range.
Flobert firearms were typically chambered for very low-power rimfire cartridges such as 6 mm Flobert (.22 BB Cap), .22 CB Cap, or .32 Short/Short Flobert calibers. These rifles were often inexpensive, lightweight single-shots — popular as parlor or gallery guns in Europe and the U.S. during the late 1800s. Some early Flobert rifles used very simple breech mechanisms, while later variants incorporated better extractors and locking pieces.
