Sharps Model 1859 “Buffalo” Rifle, .50-70 Conversion
Description: This is a unique and unusual conversion of an 1859 Sharps straight slant military action to a sporting configuration. The action is marked on the right side with “C. Sharp’s Pat’d, Oct 5th, 1852”, on the left side with “C. Sharp’s Pat’d, Sep 12th, 1848” and on the tang with the serial number C34756. This action has been converted to a center fire ignition system, having the original primer system ground off and fitted with a centerfire mechanism. The breech action works very smoothly and the lever closes smartly. The action was rebarreled at some time in the past with a 30 inch heavy octagonal muzzleloader barrel that is partially marked with the barrel maker’s name: “D. M. Burli”…? (see picture for more detail). The jaw marks of the vise used in the rebarreling process are visible at the breech of the barrel, which measures 1.215” across the flats at the breech and measures 1.150 at the muzzle. The barrel has patches of bluing still visible. The front sight appears to be a small German silver sight, with the rear sight being a hunting style sight that is missing the elevator. The old underbarrel thimble slots for a ramrod are visible, having long ago been filled in with brass. The forearm wood is obviously a handmade addition to accommodate the added octagonal 30 inch barrel. And on the underside of the buttstock, the military sling mount has been filled in with a wood replacement. The rifle was rebored recently to the .50-70 Gov’t caliber, as the original muzzleloader bore/chamber were beyond salvage and were of an unknown and/or unidentifiable caliber. The bore is unfired and perfect. There is an overall aged patina finish on the receiver and related metal parts. This fine old rifle has surely “seen the buffalo” on the Kansas plains, and is an excellent example of the frugality and resourcefulness of the Western frontier gunsmith that provided the workmanship to convert this military action to a sporting configuration. This rifle weighs about 13-14 pounds! The rifle displays it’s age and persona very well; if this old Sharps could only speak…! Payment via certified bank check ONLY! No credit cards, PayPal, etc.; email me for all questions and/or requests for additional pictures. $120 for shipping to lower 48 (rifle will be shipped in a hard case); required supplemental insurance, as quoted by the shipper, will be at the buyer’s expense. Thank you for your interest.
