A Krag Schuetzen Rifle (Possibly a Farrow Rifle?)
Description:
This rifle, serial number 17957, was originally assembled at Springfield Armory around July or August of 1895.
The serial number is listed in Springfield Research Services (SRS) data, as a Model 1892 rifle, that was received by West Virginia, on September, 24, 1896.
The '1894' on the action is the year that the receiver-part was manufactured. Springfield Armory did not get to apply the serial #17957 to a receiver, until the late summer of 1895.
The action (receiver) and Striker/Extractor Assembly are the Model 1892 design. (The Bolt appears to be a model 1896 bolt).
The receiver has not undergone the conversion of being 'notched' for the later style extractors, that had a bolt 'hold-open' pin.
The tang sight is a by Willard Milton Farrow.
Willard Milton Farrow was a competitor at Sea Girt, from the late 1890s until the National Guard and NRA matches at Sea Girt were no longer.
W. Milton Farrow operated his rifle shop, making and selling his own designs of single shot rifles in Morgantown, West Virginia, from 1892-93 until about 1897. His rifles were made for black powder and lead bullets. Several were for cartridges of Farrow's own design. He marked just over half of his 25 surviving rifles. The rest were unmarked.
This rifle is published in the September/October 2025 issue of "Single Shot Rifle Journal"... in this article the author goes into more detail as to why he believes this may possibly be a Farrow built and personally owned rifle.
Extremely good overall condition. Bore is very good condition.
