American Percussion Halfstock Golcher Rifle
SALE PENDING
Description: A very clean mid-19th century plains rifle with a .41 cal, 30” heavy 1.08" octagonal barrel with a partially bright bore showing scattered patches of moderate oxidation and good rifling. The barrel of this rifle is mostly a pewter gunmetal patina showing evidence of an old cleaning with remnants of light to perhaps moderate old pitting. There is a signature along the top barrel flat that sadly is no longer legible. The Jos. Golcher lock has toned to dark gray showing softened simple embellishments and the hammer is a pewter gunmetal tone. A few screws appear to be replacements and the rifle is fitted with a pewter nosecap that shows remnants of what appears to be nickel finish, rectangular German silver barrel pin escutcheons, single spur triggerguard, crescent buttplate with toeplate, unengraved monogram plate atop the wrist and single lock screw escutcheon. The pendulum patchbox shows thinning finish and has mostly toned to gray. The smooth walnut stock remains in good condition as lightly refinished showing strong flame grain near the butt and shallow handling marks. The edges are still very nice and the sides of the butt show some very attractive grain figure. The lock is single acting with double set triggers and remains functional, the original sporting rear sight is intact, the target globe front sight is loose in its dovetail and a more modern replacement brass-tipped wooden ramrod is included.
