Civil War Confederate Altered For Cavalry Use Wm Morgan Petersburg Virginia Double Barrel Shotgun

Description:
This is a really neat gun. It is a British made percussion double barrel shotgun circa 1850 that was imported and or sold by William Morgan of Petersburg VA. It is marked on the top of the rib Wm Petersburg in script. Also has some silver inlaid sporting scene on the rib with some of the silver missing. The gun was then altered by reducing the length of the barrels to 22 1/2 inches, a front sight added, and a sling swivel screwed into the butt. Gun retains a pleasing even age patina with some light rust and pitting here and there. Stock is solid with some dings and handling marks, with a very well done minor spliced repair above the right lock. The right lock is in good working order, the left one seems to be missing the mainspring. German silver patchbox in the butt. Plain wood ramrod. 16 bore gun. This gun was once in the famed Don Bryan collection of Confederate weapons.

William Morgan immigrated to this country in 1816, settling in Petersburg, Virginia where he went into business with his brother, Andrew, in Petersburg; their business, advertised as “Morgan & Brother” commenced operation, just prior to 1850. Both Morgan brothers are listed as gunsmiths in the 1850 and 1860 US census records. The Morgan brothers maintained a hardware store on Sycamore St., in antebellum Petersburg; from this store, they sold a wide range of household goods and tools, as well as guns; in the Petersburg census of 1850, Morgan is listed not only as a gunsmith, but a member of the Petersburg Mechanic Benevolent Association. Like many gunsmiths of the antebellum period, it is presumed that the majority of the guns the Morgans sold were just assembled by them, from European parts; by 1860, an advertisement in the Petersburg Directory, listed William Morgan & Brother as “importers and manufacturers of all kinds of guns, pistols, rifles, &c. at Sycamore Street”. An example of a Morgan shotgun can be seen in the book Confederate & Southern Agent Marked Shotguns by Russ Pritchard Jr. and John Ashworth Jr.

All in all, a very hard to find Southern Agent marked double barrel shotgun that was altered for use by Confederate Cavalry during the war.
