Rare J. Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford St London Top-Lever Hammer SXS 12Ga circa 1870 - Fine Condition
Description: Trades Welcome & Great Layaway Plan
"I can not find a serial number on the receiver or barrel; thus, it is probably under the sidelocks. I am not going to pull the sideocks to find it. I will leave that up to the buyer." Make offer.
J. Purdey top-lever hammer side-by-side shotgun chambered in 12 gauge. Manufactured circa 1870 and marked “J. Purdey, 314½ Oxford St, London.” The shotgun features 30½-inch fine Damascus barrels with 2½-inch chambers and cylindrical chokes. It is configured with external hammers and a top-lever action typical of Purdey’s mid-18th-century design. The receiver and lockplates display scroll and foliate engraving, and the overall metal finish has naturally aged to a soft grey tone consistent with period steel.
The stock is an English straight-grip pattern with fine checkering at the wrist and forearm. The Damascus barrels retain visible patterning, and the bores are described as bright. This shotgun is used and dates to the late 18th century, representing an antique configuration from Purdey’s London workshop. The mechanical operation was noted as excellent at the time of description, with the locks and action retaining crisp engraving detail.
Overall fitment includes the original wood furniture and double triggers. The piece reflects Purdey’s craftsmanship of the era with matching serial and address markings. No modern accessories or packaging are included beyond the assembled firearm itself. As an antique, this 12-gauge Purdey hammer gun embodies period construction with Damascus barrels and engraved steel components from circa 1870.
