This Auto-Ordnance 1928 Thompson, manufactured during the 1970s/1980s within the “A” suffix serial range, is an exceptionally faithful reproduction of the iconic vintage Tommy Gun. Renowned as one of the definitive “heavy metal” submachine guns in U.S. history, the Thompson offered semi- and full-automatic fire on an open bolt, crafted with meticulous machining and classic hardwood furniture—a hallmark of style and durability unmatched by later sheet metal versions.

It features a blade front sight paired with a folding ladder peep rear sight, along with the signature Thompson-marked Cutts Compensator and cooling fins on the barrel. The gun includes the characteristic horizontal foregrip and rear pistol grip, complemented by a quick-detach buttstock for versatility. The trigger group is equipped with selector and safety switches, while the receiver proudly displays Auto-Ordnance patent information on the right and military-style nomenclature on the left.

The magazine well accommodates both drum and stick magazines, with internals adhering to the classic 1928 pattern, including an “S”-marked Blish Lock. This example is complete with two Type “L” 50-round drum magazines, one Type “X” 10-round drum magazine, seven stick magazines, a cleaning rod, and a tan canvas transport case, making it a comprehensive and highly desirable collector’s set.

Condition

Excellent, with 97% plus original blue finish, showing some light scratches and handling marks. The furniture is also excellent, with minor scratches and dings. Some rust is present on the magazines, and mild staining on the case. Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios or Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479.
