Auto Ordnance Thompson M1927A1 Deluxe Carbine w/Violin Case, New in Box
Description: This is a fairly accurate representation of the original 1920s era Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. It of course uses a longer barrel to meet NFA requirements. The gun also fires from a closed bolt rather than the original’s open bolt design to prevent illegal full auto conversions. This example is indeed brand new in the box, though there is one small blemish. There is a small spot of patina on top of the compensator; otherwise, the finish is as it should be. The M1927A1 is a popular firearm thanks to its very close appearance to the original Thompson sub-gun as it appeared in the late 1920s. Other versions are also available, one of which nearly duplicates the appearance of the U.S. Army’s Thompson M1A1 sub-guns used during the Second World War. The difference is in the longer barrel. Some versions have a 14.5 inch barrel with a pinned compensator for an overall length of 16.0 inches. This keeps them from being classified as short-barreled rifles. The Thompson Sub-Machine Gun was originally created by Brigadier General John T. Thompson to replace the longer rifles then in service, such as the ’03 Springfield rifle. While in hindsight this would not have worked due to the sub-gun’s short effective range, it did point the way towards the future of military arms with respect to full-auto rifles. The trench fighting which in World War One certainly indicated the need for a compact (compared to the rifle), fully automatic weapon for use in confined spaces. The appearance on the battlefield of the famous German SMG, the Schmeisser MP18, could only have validated the existence and need for BG Thompson’s weapon in the eyes of other Army generals and the Ordnance Dept. Ultimately, the Thompson would see use in many conflicts worldwide, similar to the later AK47. One advantage that the older versions of the Thompson had over the later M1A1 was the vertical grip. This allowed for far better control when firing the gun. The simple horizontal grip on the M1A1 gave that SMG its one notable flaw, a tendency to “buck up” when fired in longer bursts. The M1A1 was also limited to its stick magazines and could not use the drum magazine. Since the drums were usually unreliable in mud and dirt, this was not as much of a handicap as it sounds. One very important component that comes with the 1927A1 is what is known as the “third hand”. This is a tool that is 2.12 inches long, 0.468 inches wide, and 0.19 inches thick. The lower portion of the piece of steel is drilled through, the slot taking the form of a medicinal “pill”. The slot is 0.750” long and 0.380” wide. The top of the third hand has beveled edges for easier insertion. Since the 1927A1 is a closed-bolt gun, rather than the open-bolt type like the originals, this creates as problem for the insertion of the drum mag as the bolt is partially in the way. There is also no way for the drum mag to hit the bolt-hold-open lever when the last round is fired. By comparison, the stick mag is inserted vertically, making use of the T-shaped rib on the back of the magazine body to trip the bolt hold open lever. The drum on the other hand, because it is inserted from the side, does not have any component which contacts the bolt catch lever. This is where the third hand comes in. It is inserted (bevel end first) into the same slot the stick mag’s T-rib fits into. Pushed up all the way, it will allow the user to lock the bolt back to insert or remove the drum magazine. The slot allows the nose of the magazine catch to pass through the third hand, keeping it in place with it enough vertical movement remaining to allow for the bolt to be locked back or released. The M1927A1 Deluxe shown here is part of a kit which includes the carbine’s original case, a 1920’s style “violin case”, one 20-round stick magazine, and one 50-round drum mag.
