** SOLD ** Merrimack Arms Newburyport MA No. 44 Ballard Dual Ignition Carbine Chambered in .44 Rimfire **Rare Carbine - Less Than 200 Made**
Description: Here we have a very scarce Civil War era Ballard No. 44 Carbine made be Merrimack Arms in Newburyport MA. The Ballard Carbine was a breech loading, metallic cartridge breechloader that was invented by Charles H Ballard of Worchester, Massachusetts. As Ballard was an inventor and not a manufacturer, he sought a way to market and sell his invention with an eye towards collecting patent royalties, instead of investing in a manufacturing facility to produce his guns. This particular example was manufactured by Merrimack Arms. A handful of carbines were produced with a unique Dual Ignition system that allowed them to be used as percussion arms if the rimfire ammunition was not available. These guns had a percussion cone centrally located in the rear of the breechblock, which was stuck by the face of the hammer neck as seen in the last photo. These guns would utilize the normal .44RF ammunition while it was available, but could also use percussion caps to ignite reloaded .44RF cases (with a vent hole drilled into their base), or could use nitrated paper cartridges. These “dual ignition” Ballard military carbines are very scarce. This rifle has a 22 inch round barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling. The rear sight is "L" shaped and has a 200 yd and 300 yd setting. The right corner of the 200 yd leaf has a chip but the sight is still usable. The metal finish has worn to a warm grey patina and has some finish loss. The wood stock has a couple of hairline cracks while the forend has a chip missing on the right side and a couple of fine cracks on the bottom and left side. This beautiful piece of history would make a great addition to a collection of Civil War militaria or a strong start to a new collection.
