#3459 Ballard 56-56 Caliber Carbine Made By Dwight Chapin & Co.
Merwin & Bray were the agents for Ballard’s carbines and rifles. This carbine is 56-56 Spencer caliber. These were contracted to Dwight, Chapin & Co. This one has a U.S. marked butt plate and the carbines were sold and issued to the 3rd, 6th, 8th 11th, 12th, 13th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Some were issued to the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and the 7th Ohio Calvary. This Ballard is in the rare 56-56 Spencer caliber and was part of 115 that were delivered in 1863 to the U.S. Ordnance Department. This one retains over 60% original finish and is crisp and tight. The bore is excellent bright and shinny except for two minor blemishes near the chamber end of the barrel. The butt stock has an old repair but is solid. It has the U.S. stamp on the butt plate. The left receiver has Merwin & Bray Agents, NY and the right side has Ballard’s Patent Nov. 5, 1861. It has sling swivels front and rear and is chambered for the 56-56 Spencer rimfire cartridge. This very RARE Ballard Carbine variant is serial number 680 and was made by Dwight, Chapin & Co. who had also been Superintendent for Springfield Armory.
