Early Marlin Ballard No 2 Sporting Rifle
Description: S#1942, 38 rimfire or centerfire, 28 inch octagon barrel, good bore with worn rifling and scattered areas of erosion. This first style No 2 sporting rifle was built between 1878 and 1880. Features include first type Norway Iron (cast) Frame without rebated top edges, second style ring lever, Brown style hammer with long straight spur, short Brown style trigger, and a small, early style screw holding the reversible firing pin in place. Rifle remains in very good condition with 85% barrel blue showing a few scattered stains and scratches with silvering on high edges and at muzzle. Frame shows strong traces, perhaps 10-15% case colors with silvering and scattered light stains. Lever is mostly grey with traces of case colors in protected areas. Breechblock has strong colors on sides and protected areas while exposed areas have developed a grey patina. Forend has a schnable tip with wedge shaped horn inlay with scattered dents and dings from use. A small repaired crack shows on left side at both front and rear. Butstock shows a few dings with a tiny grain crack on left side behind frame. Butplate, both sides of split breech, frame, forend and barrel bottom are all numbered "1942" with identical fonts. Barrel bottom and forend also show "2572" in the same font and extractor shows "3574" also applied with the same die set. rear sight is an original Marlin Ballard Rocky Mountain sight.
