Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co., Ballard's Patent Sporting Rifle; 44RF.
Description: Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co., Newburyport, Mass., Ballard's Patent Nov.5, 1861; Sporting Rifle, 44RF; SN18727. Manufactured 1867-1869, about 2000 made; dual percussion/cartridge system (see Flayderman, p148). Gun is complete and functional with tight lock-up, surprisingly decent bore and original finish: some original bbl blue mostly gone to plumb, cased hardware silvered and about 50%, better preserved on falling-block, original varnish on stock. German silver front and folding-leaf rear sights There are the usual Ballard 10-to-2 cracks on the buttstock where it meets the receiver but they are not throiugh-going and extend less than 2" into the buttstock. There is also an ingenious old repair to the hammer, which is now totally strong and functional. The hammer spur/firing pin portion broke at its base just above the rotating sear portion of the hammer. Someone who knew his stuff drilled a 1/4" hole from the top of the spur portion down into the sear portion, attached the two pieces with a 1/4" steel rod for a perfect fit and brazed the entire assembly. Hopefully the pictures help clarify my attempted explanation. These are very early rare guns and the dual ignition system is an interesting period design. Antique, $35 shipping.
