UNUSUAL AND VERY RARE HEAVY BARREL EARLY J. M. MARLIN PRODUCED BALLARD .22 RIM FIRE No. 3 GALLERY RIFLE
Description: UNUSUAL AND VERY RARE HEAVY BARREL EARLY J. M. MARLIN PRODUCED BALLARD .22 RIM FIRE No. 3 GALLERY RIFLE, #3XXX. The earliest Marlin produced Ballards were marked J. M. Marlin (with patent dates etc.) on the side of the receiver. These rifles in serial range of about 500 - 17000 were manufactured from 1875 to 1881. After this date the receivers were stamped "Marlin Firearms Company" and produced from 1881-1891. By the low serial number, this rifle was probably made around 1877-1878. The No.3 Gallery rifle chambered in .22 Short and/or Long usually had a fairly lightweight barrel requiring a "fluted" or dished out receiver ring on top of the action to view the sights. This rifle has a fairly heavy 24" octagon barrel and has a flat top receiver as usually seen on larger caliber Ballards. In the excellent and extensive book BALLARD: THE GREAT AMERICAN SINGLE SHOT RIFLE by John T. Dutcher, on page 121 he pictures a rifle in the 3000 serial range similar to this which he states weighs 8 lbs. This example weighs 9 lbs, and like the one in the book has the early ring lever, ebony wedge in the forend schnable tip, deep crescent butt plate etc. He states that this configuration is scarce. This fine condition example retains excellent deep blue on the barrel and also retains the original gallery notched rear sight and small blade front sight. The serial number under the forend on the barrel matches the receiver number. The receiver case colors have mostly faded to a very mottled blue/gray/silver with good case color under the lever and on the bottom rear of the receiver and on the upper heel of the butt plate, etc. The wood is excellent and retains most of the original finish. The action is exceptionally tight. I believe this one is chambered in .22 Short and the bore (amazingly) is excellent! This is a truly rare and fine condition 140+ year old Ballard with great features! SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .22 Short Manufacturer: J. M. MARLIN/BALLARD Model: No. 3 GALLERY RIFLE Serial Number: 3XXX Barrel Length: 24" OCT. Condition: FINE+ |
