Fabrique National Action/ 98.350 Ackley Short Mag, Benchrest.
Description: FN Model 98 .350 Ackley Short Magnum. This rifle is very well made. It was built by a maker unknown to me that was very skilled in all aspects of rifle building. The stock dimensions are lovely, the chequering that of a very high end rifle and the wood to metal fit is far above average. The action is an FN commercial standard length 8 3/4" action with a polished body, trigger is around 1 1/2 pounds pull, front and rear bridges are both drilled for standard bases with the rear bridge being drilled for a right side mounted peep that are factory holes on an FN action, blue is strong on both action and bottom metal, the mag looks to hold 3 down 1 up. The scope is a Redfield 3x9 fixed in engraved mounts. The engraved mounts are very nice with open scroll, the optics are clear. The barrel is 23" with 2 step-downs, the muzzle end still qualifying as a bull barrel with a rebated crown, ramp mounted front open sight, the bore and chamber are clean and the rifle looks to have been shot very few times. The stock is dense walnut with nice figure, the fore end is nicely carved and the chequering is well placed and executed, the butt is also very well done with a pronounced pistol grip that terminates in a large rosewood cap, the cheeckpiece is attractive and fits the rifle well, 13 1/2" length of pull to a Pachmayr pad. 10lbs 6oz. As to caliber information: I can find very little. It is derived from a .300 H&H case possibly shortened and necked to .358. In looking at Wildcat Cartridges by Richard F Simmons circa 1948, page pictured below, the cartridge is most likely Ackley .35 Magnum. He calls it a modern version of the .35 Newton. One seeminly knowledgeable forum member states it is very similar to a .350 Mashburn mag. If anyone knows, send me a message. Consignment, please send any offers via email. 084581 MSSSDP $950.00 Trading In: Pre War American Sporters, RG Owen, Neidner, Sedgley, Wundhammer, Howe, Seymour Griffin, Hoffman, Springfield '03, Mauser, Fred Adolph, Griffin & Howe, Winchester Pre War Model 70s and Model 54s, Double Rifles- Nitro and Black Powder Sporting Rifles and Shotguns.
