The Spike Driver was engineered specifically around the .500 S&W Magnum cartridge rather than adapting an existing lever-action design. Big Horn Armory combined features inspired by the historic Winchester 1886 and 1892 actions into a stronger modern platform capable of handling one of the most powerful commercially available handgun cartridges.
One of the biggest advantages of the Spike Driver is what happens when .500 S&W ammunition is fired from a rifle-length barrel. Depending on the load, velocities can increase by roughly 300–600 fps compared to a revolver, producing energy levels approaching some traditional dangerous-game rifle cartridges.
