SOLD For sale is a vintage Belgian Browning B.A.R from the 1st production run (1967-1979) with the factory hand engraved receiver and checkered walnut stock (factory recoil pad on magnum calibers)! These rifles are quality pieces of a time gone by, hand fit, hand finished, and hand engraved! Yep even the standard grade guns from back then were given the same treatment as their highly embelished counterparts such as this gun. Great shooting rifles that are sought after by collectors and sportsman alike.
This specific example is quite rare, I've been told as many as 10 and as few as 5 were made and I've only seen 1 other example to date. These rifles were initially intended to be apart of the 1978 Centennial Set, as identified by the brass medallion in the pistol grip of the stock with "1878-1978 Browning Centennial" engraved on it. Somewhere along the way, either during or right after this test run of 5-10 rifles, it was decided not to include them and thus they were not cataloged. The reasons could vary but my assumption is that, with the engraver's strike going on at the time, it would be too difficult or too costly to attempt to produce 2500 of them to accompany the other Centennial Sets. This combined with the need for 2500 more high grade stock sets would have put quite a strain on produciton at the time.
As I hope the photos can show, this rifle is exquisite. The engraving, which is signed by J. Bague on the left side, is well executed and the polished blue finish really brings it to life in the right lighting. The animals and background scenery are finely detailed, accurately shaped, and the surrounding scrollwork is even and frames the scenes nicely.
The hand checkered and carved wood is nothing short of top tier quality that was available on Browning's at the time. With the Grade V rifles being discontinued in 1974, these Grade IV guns were the highest grade available. Overall the walnut has a nice orange/brown color with horizontal dark wood grain, topped off with vertical gold highlights, all of which extend the entire length of both the stock and the forend.
The rifle was professionally restored to new condition with factory finishes. There are almost no signs of handling or use in either the wood or the metal, a true 98-99% example. It is indiscernable from factory in every regard. When I received the rifle it had numerous dings and scratches in the wood furniture and scattered wear in the bluing, this was the reason for the restoration. It is absolutely beautiful now and looks exactly as it left the factory in 1978.
