BROWNING BAR II GRADE I .243 WIN
Description: Guns Listing ID: 465253 Browning Automatic Rifle History & Background The Browning Automatic Rifle, also called BAR, is part of a larger series of machine and light machine guns designed in 1917 for shooting from the hip – a vital feature to soldiers engaged in trench warfare during WWI. The U.S. military began retiring the Browning automatic rifle in the 1950s to be replaced by a SAW variant of the M14. They completed their service in the 1970s. Colt received Browning patents after World War I to produce the Browning automatic rifle and make it available for commercial use, but because of its limited utility for civilians, there were few sales. During the depression, the Colt Monitor was made available to civilians for $300, complete with cleaning and spare parts kits. While restrictions for civilian BAR ownership ramped up following the National Firearms Act of 1934, the 1968 import ban, and the 1986 sales ban on U.S. produced machine guns, some transferable civilian-owned Browning automatic rifles would come up for qualified buyers. And other companies would manufacture legal semi-automatic variants of the Browning automatic rifle for civilian use. Date Historic Information Serial Number Info 1976-1992 In 1975 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998. 1. BAR Type 137=BAR High Power Rifle 2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code Z=1 Y=2 X=3 W=4 V=5 T=6 R=7 P=8 N=9 M=0 3. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year. Serial Number Example: 137RT01001 This would be a BAR High Power Rifle, manufactured in 1976 with the serial number 01001. Browning Bar rifles made between 1976 and 1992 are commonly known as \"type 2\" rifles. These rifles are very similar to the original models, but have a wider and shallower cut-out for the receiver, so the receiver end of the stock does not sit completely flush.
