BSA 1875
Description: Guns Listing ID: 329112 1875 BSA Snider Conversion Percussion .577 Carbine “In May of 1873 the British war department shipped 10,000 Snider long rifles, and 3000 Snider carbines together with a supply of 3 ½ million rounds of ammunition to Portugal. These supplies had a declared value of 47,000 pounds Sterling and had been taken out of the government stores. There were protests from the British gun trade and questions were raised in the House of Commons. It was felt that the gunmakers were losing enough business as it was, what with the government factory at Enfield producing military arms for use n Great Britain, without their also supplying foreign armies. In order to placate the trade, the British War Office helped arrange a contract between the Birmingham Small Arms & Metal Company (BSA) and the Portuguese Government, for the supply of 10,000 Snider long rifles with triangular bayonets and 1,200 Snider cavalry carbines.” (From The Snider Rifle In Portugal by Charles J. Purdon) This carbine is one of the 1200 mentioned above. Condition is very good over all. Bore is shiny with some marking about half way down the barrel. Finish is consistent. Stock is solid.
