Antique CIVIL WAR BURNSIDE Model 1864 “5th Model” SADDLE RING Carbine Classic PERCUSSION Carbine Made in Providence, RI
Description: Antique CIVIL WAR BURNSIDE Model 1864 “5th Model” SADDLE RING Carbine Classic PERCUSSION Carbine Made in Providence, RI Here we present an antique Burnside Model 1864, also known as the Burnside “5th” Model Carbine, made circa 1863 to 1865 by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. General Ambrose Burnside was the designer of this firearm before the Civil War but was not involved in wartime development of the rifle due to his leaving to lead troops during the conflict. This carbine employed a cone shaped metal cartridge for use in the percussion firing system. Though historical literature refers to a Model 1863, none are marked with this date and collectors have generally referred to this model as the 5th model. Approximately 43,000 carbines of this model were produced, with the serial numbers running from 1 through 43,000. There were 19,000 that featured the “Model 1864” stamped on the top of the breech, with later production reverting back to use the 1856 patent date. Standard features include an iron buttplate, a single iron barrel band, a saddle riding bar and ring on the left side, a strap hook on the bottom of the butt, a double hinged iron loading lever which also serves as a trigger guard, a hinged sight, and a chamber tapered for the unique Burnside metal cartridge with a priming hole in the bottom for percussion. The overall condition is very good. Some original blue remains with a plum patina throughout. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The markings are clear. There are 2 visible cartouches on the left side of the wrist. Nice, smooth walnut stock. Here we have a fantastic example of a Civil War Burnside Carbine that would have seen so much history in the hands of a cavalryman. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 21 inches. Caliber: .54 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
