Burnside 5th Model Civil War Saddle Ring (2nd Texas Volunteer Cavalry???) Carbine, serial # 11973, cal. 54, with a 21'' barrel and a bright near excellent bore showing just a few small spots of minor oxidation and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this carbine has markings and ''MODEL OF 1864'' over the breech and lockplate maker markings are a little soft but legible. The breechblock still retains some attractive bright blue throughout the interior protected areas. The smooth walnut forend and straight grip buttstock remain in very good plus condition having darkened from the years with a few scattered tiny chips, some thin drying cracks and handling marks. There are two rather soft but visible cartouches on the left side wrist and the left side butt is lightly inscribed with the initials ''J. J. W. C. O. B.'' (I found a Lt. Col. James Walker that was in the 2nd Texas Cavalry but I don't know what his middle initial was needs further research). The saddle ring and original sights are intact, the breech block and barrel are matching the frame. The breechblock guide screw I believe was replaced and the action functions well mechanically with a crisp hammer. Note: Springfield Research lists carbine serial #11972 as being issued to the 2nd Texas Volunteer Cavalry, this one needs to be researched further. The overall condition as described and photographed is G - G plus plus. Inv. # 22-182
