Burnside Carbine, 5th Model, .54 cal
Description: Burnside 5th model Civil War carbine. Cal.54 Serial # 17349. Made 1863 to 1865. The carbine metal is about 90% original condition. Bore has distinct lands and grooves with a shiny surface when shining a light at the breach however there is some erosion in the barrel from previous firing. Additional pics available upon request. Markings are as follows. On the receiver, just in front of the bullet block, “BURNSIDE PATENT/MARCH 25TH 1856/ 17349.” Matching number “17349” on top front of block. Rear sight is marked with an “H” on the left side and a “5” over a “3” on top of the sight leaf. In front of the rear sight, the top of the barrel is marked “CAST STEEL 1862”. Below the rear sight are two inspector markings, a “D” and a “P”. The right side receiver tang is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./ PROVIDENCE=R.I.” with an inspector mark “D” on the end of the tang. The hammer has inspector mark “H” on the right side. The top receiver tang is also marked with an “H” as well as the two bottom parts of the receiver block and rear of the receiver tang. The top of the butt stock is stamped with the letters “DPS”. The top of the butt plate with what appears to be a “C” with a small “R” inside it. The bottom sling swivel is stamped with a “C”. There is a “C” of the left side of the lever. Lastly there are three initials on the bottom of the fore end but they are so deep, I can’t make them out. The barrel exhibits a deep blue along with the outer lever metal. The balance is a smooth silvery finish which is probably faded heat treatment. The stock has a number of shallow dings but is very nice overall. The fore end is populated with more dings that the butt but mostly shallow ones except for one fairly deep on the right side. No cracks or chips. The curved steel butt plate has some very shallow pitting. See picture. Antique. can ship direct to buyer. Shipping charges $50 in the continental US. Bank check, certified check or money order accepted. Private sell. Do not have credit card. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Burnside Model: Model 5 Serial Number: 17349 Barrel Length: 21 in.
