Description: CIVIL WAR/FRONTIER Antique U.S. BURNSIDE Percussion SADDLE RING CARBINE RHODE ISLAND Manufactured CAVALRY BREECH LOADER Here we present an antique U.S. Burnside Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, made by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. This carbine was designed by the renowned Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, who resigned his military position to focus on its development. Prior to the Civil War, Burnside also served as the treasurer of Bristol Firearms Co., the company that produced his patented carbine. Unfortunately, he sold his shares just before the outbreak of the war in June 1859. His career was marked by political struggles within the Army; despite achieving success and promotions, he was often undermined by his enemies. Burnside himself participated in key battles such as the First Battle of Manassas, Battle of Sharpsburg, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of the Crater. The Burnside Carbine was distinctive among percussion carbines of its era, featuring a copper or foil casing that allowed for easier and quicker loading and unloading. It was produced in five different models, with improvements made over time. During the Civil War, Burnside carbines were highly prolific, with approximately 53,000 units across various configurations. Notable cavalry units that used them included the 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, 5th, 6th, and 7th Ohio, 1st New Jersey, 3rd West Virginia, 3rd, 14th, and 18th Pennsylvania, as well as the 2nd, 12th, 14th, and 16th Illinois regiments. This carbine was manufactured circa 1863-1865 and has two faint cartouches on left wrist with single letter inspection marks on various parts. The overall condition is nearing fine. Original dark brown patina. The action is strong. Stock is solid and is well preserved for the age. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Legible markings. Own the original!
