Excellent CW ID’D Burnside 4th Model Breechloading Carbine 2nd Illinois Regiment
Description: Excellent CW ID’D Burnside 4th Model Breechloading Carbine 2nd Illinois Regiment Offered here for sale and just acquired from a very prestigious collection is this very fine Civil War vintage Burnside 4th Model Civil War breechloading saddle ring carbine. This specimen, serial number 34412, is all original and is in excellent condition. Cal. 50. Bbl. 21". For a gun that over 7,000 were made, this gun produced in early 1863 is hard to find in this condition – especially as issue during the Civil War. All earlier model Burnsides are scarce and most saw hard service in the field. This model 1863 is virtually identical externally to 3rd model, but with hinged 2 piece breech block instead of the solid block previously. It allowed for much easier loading with breech now pointing straight up when opened. The 4th model is marked on 21" barrel forward of adjustable rear sight “CAST STEEL 1862", Breech with earlier stamp "BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856", lock "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO / PROVIDENCE: R.I." The specimen exhibits much of its original fire blue finish on breechblock and interior parts and has a near mint bore. The right side of the frame still has very bright case colors with the right side fading to a slightly bluish gray patina. The barrel likewise has thinning blue which mostly has faded to a pleasing patina. The wood is in excellent condition with very sharp cartouches in wood. The 4th model Burnside saw service with NJ, Michigan, Indiana, Rhode Island, Ohio, West Virginia, NY, PA & Illinois cavalry regiments, S#s of many can be found in National Archive records. This one is found as a range match in serial numbers attributed to the 2nd Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. The regiment participated in dozens of actions in Tennesee and Louisiana from 1861 until the end of the war and incurred heavy casualties in the conflict losing during service 8 Officers and 50 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 173 Enlisted men by disease. Three days after Lee’s surrender General Grant issued an order complementing the regiment for its gallantry in action. Winning will be given regimental records and battle information along with purchase. Thank you for your winning bid.
