Historic ID’D Burnside Model 1862 .54 CW Carbine 4th Wisconsin Cavalry
SALE PENDING
Description: Historic ID’D Burnside Model 1862 .54 CW Carbine 4th Wisconsin Cavalry Offered here for sale and just acquired from a local estate is a “true” Civil War issued Burnside .54 caliber breechloading carbine. The Burnside Carbine Model 1862 was designed by Ambrose Burnside, Civil war general in the Civil War and a future governor of Rhode Island. The rifle was known for its unique design and use of a "burnside" cartridge, which was a .54 caliber round, and was one of the first of its kind to use this type of breech-loading mechanism. The carbine was used extensively during the Civil War by Union cavalry units. The Burnside carbine had a distinctive rotating breech mechanism, where the rear of the barrel would rotate open to allow the cartridge to be inserted. This was a unique feature at the time and contributed to its recognition. It has a walnut stock, a steel frame, and a 21-inch barrel, making it compact and relatively easy to handle, especially in mounted cavalry operations. During the war the Burnside Rifle Company made over 50,000 units between 1861 and 1865. The carbine was primarily used by Union cavalry, but it was also issued to some infantry units. Its popularity came from its ease of use and reliability in combat. By 1862, the Burnside Carbine was already in full production, and the serial number 15920 places it within the middle of production. Records in the National Archives as provided by the Springfield Research Co. places this serial number in a range “match” of carbines issued to the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry in August of 1863. The regiment was organized in 1861 and participated in numerous engagements throughout the war. We will supply a history of the regiment to the purchaser. The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry was initially organized as the 4th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in July 1861 at Racine, Wisconsin. On September 1, 1863, it was reconstituted as the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. The regiment served in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas during the Civil War, returning to Madison, Wisconsin, in June 1866. Over its service, the regiment enlisted a total of 2,045 men and suffered 431 fatalities, including both combat-related deaths and those from disease. As far as condition is concerned this specimen certain appears to have seen actual hard service in the Civil War and when it was acquired it showed much surface rust which we have for the most part clean to give it a presentable appearance. More detailed cleaning in the recesses will remove more dirt and grit. The outward appearance is a grainy brown patina but the piece still has SHARP markings and the inspectors cartouches in the wood are still visible which will help to retain its value. The bore is still very good and mechanically perfect so it should appeal to the collector as well as the reenactor/shooting enthusiast. The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry benefited from the Burnside’s faster reloading time in the fluid and mobile combat scenarios that were typical for cavalry operations. The Burnside Carbine Model 1862, like many Civil War-era firearms, is highly collectible today. Its rarity, historical significance, and unique design contribute to its value.
