Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 26 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 140 Enlisted men by disease. Total 170. This carbine would have been issued some time in 1863, thus riding on Sherman's "March to the Sea" and been present at the Siege of Savannah, along with the final campaign into the Carolinas early in 1865!! Barrel is marked with CAST STEEL 1863 and inspector marks R and P. Wrist of butt stock has 2 faint inspectors' cartouches. Walnut stocks. Blued and case hardened finish. Single shot percussion, caliber .54, 5th model having the noticeable guide screw on the right side center of frame. The Union purchased approximately 43,000 between 1863 and 1865. CONDITION: All parts are original, and the serial numbers are matching, including the front and rear sights, butt stock swivel, sling bar and sling ring, butt plate, walnut stocks, etc. Receiver retains about 10% muted case colors with the balance silvered out. Barrel is a spotty mix of gray and patina. Stocks show drying, nicks, dings and dents as well as some spur marks. Amazingly no splits or cracks. Both still fit well and have darkened with age. Hammer has positive clicks on both notches, with tight lock up and a strong spring. Action functions as it should. Bore is good, sharp rifling with some shine but also some black powder pitting. This carbine definitely "saw the elephant" and had a lot of time in a scabbard riding over Southern roads. Grades NRA Antique Good. Soldier to whom it was issued is not known at this time but the records of that would be available from the National Archives once they open again after the pandemic goes away.
