Rare 2nd Model Burnside Carbine
Description: Sold Very difficult Civil War Carbine to find and made in very limited numbers, this 2nd Model is serial number 1214, made without a forestock. Manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Company of Providence, Rhode Island (owned by Union General Ambrose Burnside), this variation was only produced from 1860 to early 1862. This carbine cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is one of only 2,000 ever produced by the company. Manufactured without any forstock, this model features a breech mechanism opened by the inside latch device on the trigger guard. The hinged center section drops down when the inner latch is activated and allows for insertion of the uniquely designed, tapered, copper Burnside cartridge. This Carbine bears serial number 1214 on the receiver, breechblock and barrel and exhibits a nice brown / gray patina on all metal surfaces. The metal surfaces have normal light rust pitting and dark areas of oxidation from war and use in the field. The sideplate is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE R. I.” and the sideplate markings are clear, as are the serial numbers. The“BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MARCH 25TH, 1856” on the receiver frame as well as the “G.P. Foster’s Patent”markings on the release lever assembly are sharp and crisp. The bore has strong rifling and shows some slight rust oxidation in spots and I will rate it a 7 on a scale from 1 to 10. The buttstock shows honest civil war use and I cannot locate a cartouche. Original front and rear sight still present. The buttstock is missing the actual swivel stud, the base is present (see pic). Carbine has no guide screw in the center of the frame. Many early Civil War Union cavalry regiments and mounted infantry units were issued the 2ndModel Burnside carbine including the 1st Rhode Island, 1st Maine, 1st New Jersey, 1st Pennsylvania and the 1st US cavalry regiments. This an extremely rare Civil War ‘Burnside’ second model carbine that is very difficult to locate for sale. Here is an opportunity to fill in that empty space of your Civil War carbine collection. Antique and can ship directly to your door steps. Please feel free to ask questions. SOLD Antique: Yes |
