Here we present an antique Bristol Firearms Company 2nd Model Cavalry Carbine, made circa 1860. There was a small production run on the 2nd model, with only 2,000 produced before the next iteration was introduced. This variant was issued to the 1st Rhode Island Infantry, which was one of the units that initiated the First Battle of Bull Run under General Ambrose E. Burnside (21 July 1861; AKA First Battle of Manassas). This was an iconic moment for the US as it marked the first major battle of the War Between the States and happened to end in a Confederate victory.

This carbine was designed by the famous Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, who resigned his position in the Army to work on it. He had the misfortune to find it necessary to sell off his shares in the company just prior to the outbreak of the war in June 1859. His misfortune did not end there. He was plagued by politics in his career in the Army, and despite success and promotion, he was quickly torn down by his enemies within the Army for any misstep. Burnside himself participated in the First Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of the Crater.

The carbine which bore his name was unlike many other percussion carbines of the time, utilizing a copper or foil casing. This made it very easy and relatively quick to load and unload. The firearm was made in 5 distinct models with improvements being made along the way. The Burnside Carbines were one of the most prolific of all the different carbines of the Civil War numbering about 53,000 in all configurations.

These carbines were manufactured in Rhode Island by the Bristol Firearms Company and later, its successor starting in 1861, the Burnside Rifle Company, from about 1857 to 1865. The Burnside was the third most used carbine utilized by the Union cavalry, bested only by the Sharps and Spencer carbines.

The overall condition is good. The action functions properly. The bore is well-rifled with a couple dark spots. The finish has matured to a dark brown patina. Both the front and rear sights are absent. The stock is solid. An uncommon opportunity to get one of the few 2nd Model Burnsides!
