Bushmaster is one of the more famous manufactures of AR-15’s and the high quality of their products is well known. The model shown above is the famous XM15-E2S Varminter. To start off, the rifle uses Bushmaster’s two-stage competition trigger, which provides this rifle with a very smooth trigger pull. The pistol grip is Hogue’s rubber finger-groove grip designed to aid in accurate shooting. Despite the Hogue label on the grip, rather than a Bushmaster logo, this grip was fitted from the factory as standard and is not an aftermarket addition to the rifle. The stock is the classic A2 model which has a storage space in the butt for tools or spare batteries for an optic. The Varminter’s standout feature is its barrel, at 24 inches in length, the barrel is fluted for its entire length to help reduce the overall weight of the rifle. The barrel measures at a full inch in diameter under the handguard, reducing to a 0.745 inches in diameter forward of the gas block. The muzzle is non-threaded and bears an 11-degree crown (non-recessed). The bore is chrome-lined for better extraction of spent cases and provides protection from corrosion. As an older XM15-E2S model, the barrel’s twist rate is the early 1-in-9” right hand twist commonly found on older AR-15s. This twist rate will stabilize 55-gr bullets as standard and will stabilize some 62-gr types as well. It will not stabilize the more modern 75-gr bullets. This twist rate will stabilize 55-gr bullets as standard and will stabilize some 62-gr types as well. It will not stabilize the more modern 75-gr bullets. Obviously, a newer barrel could be fitted with a faster twist if that was found to be necessary. Although used, this rifle is in excellent shape. The bore is in superb condition. The finish exhibits minor wear on the left side of the lower receiver. None of the marks present are scratches as they cannot be felt by fingertip. A cloth and some good oil might be able to clean them up a bit. If you are looking for an excellent varmint rifle in the semi-auto category, the Varminter is a good choice. The rifle comes with the Bushmaster-labeled hard case as well as the manual. The rifle is missing a magazine. The 20-round or shorter mags are recommended for this rifle if shooting from a bench or a prone position.
