English Antique Iron Ships Cannon,
Description: Antique English style Iron Cannon... 2 Pounder. This merchant ships gun was cast approximately in the 1810 era and has no foundary marks remaining on it. This gun was excavated in 1974 in Livermore, California by a contractor while excavating for a swimming pool. It was excavated near the old road to Mission San Jose. While I did not witness the excavation of the cannon, I did see it in the as found condition about a week after its discovery...it looked lke a rusty log. It was then sandblasted, primed, painted and displayed at my home for the next 51 years. As shown in the photos, the surface of the tube is pitted with medium to heavy pitting as one would expect on an excavated cannon. While pitted, the cannon is still structuraly solid. The bore is very rough and not suitable for firing. The vent is clear as found, Cannon Specifications: Length 48 inches Diameter at breech rimbase 7.6 inches Diameter at muzzle 5.5 inches Bore Diameter 2.5 inches Diameter of trunnions 2.5 inches Length of trunnions 2.5 inches Trunnions cast below center line of bore Distance at ends of trunnions 12 inches Weight of cannon ~ 325 pounds Condition of bore very rough and not suitable for firing.
