Antique Cannon & Carriage
Description: I have received two professional opinions regarding this cannon, here are both of them: WPA 3 Pounder Monument Gun The Works Progress Administration produced cannons for display in public parks and monuments. Under 1,000 cannons (total) were made representing several different styles. This example appears to be a miniaturized version of a Congreve 6 Pounder, a British light field gun of the Armstrong style. Significant attrition of these pieces has occurred over the past 80 years, primarily as a result of WW-II scrap drives. The carriage is contemporary with the barrel, though some of the wood has been replaced. GAR 3 Pounder Gun The Grand Army of the Republic made cannons in the late 19th century. This example appears to be a Civil War-era reproduction of a 1½ field carriage in a Napoleon-style pattern. _____________ I deal in antique phonographs, not cannons, so I have no opinion. What I can tell you that it is a very nice looking piece. The tube is solid bronze with a beautiful patina. It measures 47" long and has a 3" bore (ID). The bore is clear (not filled with concrete as is often the case) and the tube takes three guys to lift. I am told that it could be fired, but that doing so would be very unsafe due to aged metal fatigue. The carriage wheels are 40" in diameter. Persons wishing to see the gun in person are welcome to drop by; contact us at 281-288-7826 first to schedule an appointment. SOLD Antique: Yes |
