Archibald wheel hubs from American Hotchkiss Mountain Gun, model M1875.
Description:
This is a pair of cast bronze two-part wheel hubs for an American Hotchkiss Mountain Gun. A Hotchkiss design from the French arms firm, Hotchkiss & Company, it was the first original breech-loading gun in the U.S. Army and replaced the earlier M1841 mountain howitzer. It served with cavalry units during the late American Indian Wars, including the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, and was also used during the 1898 Spanish–American War in Cuba.
This particular set is one from a run of castings that was produced about 20 years ago when I was asked to repair an original gun carriage and build an additional full-scale replica carriage from modern steel to mount the original barrel when firing. They were made from the original nineteenth-century wood pattern from the Archibald Company in Massachusetts. The set includes a pair of solid bronze two-part hubs and the bronze lynchpins to secure them to the axle of the carriage.
These would be perfect for producing an authentic pair of wooden gun-carriage wheels, or for a collector. Some machining would be required to mate the two halves of each hub together, and to ream them to fit on an axle.
