Christensen Arms Model 14 Mesa FFT 6.5 PRC Burnt Bronze Cerakote Excellent Condition
Description: The Model 14 Mesa FFT was designed by Christensen Arms as a great solution to those looking for a rifle for use in backcountry hunting. Thanks to its carbon fiber stock and ultralight contour stainless steel barrel, the Mesa FFT weighs in at a light 5.5 lbs. (without accessories), making it exceptionally suitable for long treks up the side of a mountain. This example is chambered in the famous 6.5 PRC cartridge which was designed to surpass the popular 6.5 Creedmoor where it matters most – power at range. While the 6.5 Creedmoor is known for its ability to launch projectiles out to respectable distances, it tends to lack stopping power at those longer distances, at least as far as hunting cartridges are concerned. This is especially true for larger game animals such as elk. The 6.5 PRC is a compact magnum in everything but name, though it lacks the belt of older magnum cartridges like the .300 Win Mag or 6.5 mm Remington Magnum. This allows for a shorter but wider case resulting in a greater case capacity for a cartridge of the 6.5 PRC’s size, similar to the 6.5-284 cartridge. On average, the 6.5 PRC offers a 200+ fps velocity advantage over the 6.5 Creedmoor. Against the other 6.5 magnums, the 6.5 PRC has a capacity of 68.8 grains, while the 6.5-284 holds 68.3 grains, while the older 6.5 mm Remington Magnum holds 68 grains. In the Mesa FFT, four rounds of 6.5 PRC will fill the magazine plus one in the chamber for a total of five cartridges. The hinged carbon fiber floor plate of the Mesa FFT, like most of its contemporaries, is designed to be opened by hand to dump the rounds out all at once so as to avoid having to cycle the action repeatedly in order to empty the rifle when necessary. The trigger guard on the Mesa FFT is oversize in order to allow for the use of a gloved hand in winter time, an especially necessary feature if one is hunting high up in the mountains at that time of year. The trigger itself is single-stage Trigger Tech trigger. Trigger pull weight will generally be about 3 lbs. The receiver and barrel sport a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish which provides superb protection from the elements, far better than anything an old fashioned bluing can provide (though the bluing is certainly better looking). For superb accuracy, the barrel sports a match chamber and is free floating, while the stock itself features carbon fiber bedding pillars. The barrel uses button rifling and is backed by a sub-MOA guarantee. Rifling twist is 1:8 inches, suitable for most of the bullets available for the 6.5 class. The muzzle is threaded with a 1/2x28 pitch and is currently fitted with a seamless radial muzzle brake which also sports a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish. Barrel length is short compared to older rifles, with a barrel length of 20 inches (without the radial muzzle brake) vs the 22 to 26 inches of older rifles. This is for three reasons: 1) it takes advantage of more modern powders which can burn better in the shorter barrel, 2) it allows a suppressor to be added to the rifle while keeping the overall length down, and 3) it helps keep the rifle’s overall weight down. Another weight saving feature is the use of a spiral fluted bolt, which both helps reduce weight and ensures structural rigidity. The bolt knob is oversized for use with gloved hands and the receivers ejection port is enlarged to ensure reliable ejection of spent cases. Overall, the Model 14 Mesa FFT is a superb rifle and in 6.5 PRC is eminently suited for use in the mountains and other backcountry environments. This example here is preowned though it has been fired but a few times. There is no box. The rifle has been fitted with a set of Leupold 30 mm scope rings, which bring the rifle’s weight up to 6 lbs. 1.3 oz. Overall length is 41 inches and length of pull is effectively 13.5 inches. In terms of the condition, there is a slight streak of wear in the finish on the bottom of the barrel, though this may simply be a form of discoloration more than anything else. There is little wear anywhere else on the rifle. The bore is in superb shape and there is no doubt that with the right scope, the rifle will be a tack driver.
