Description:
Antique CIVIL WAR Era U.S. Gibbs Patent Percussion Saddle Ring CARBINE Rare

1 of 1,052 Gibbs Carbines Made by WILLIAM F. BROOKS

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Gibbs Patent Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, manufactured circa 1863 in New York by William F. Brooks. This carbine is one of only 1,052 Gibbs Patent carbines that the U.S. contracted to be manufactured by William F. Brooks in 1863.

The need for viable small arms in the Civil War was such that many models and manufacturers were taken on in both great as well as small numbers. The Gibbs Carbine was one of the latter with only 1,052 units reportedly produced of the intended 10,000 for the Union forces. W.F. Brooks and W.W. Marsden owned the Phoenix Arms Factory in New York that manufactured the weapon. Regretfully, the factory was destroyed during the 1863 Draft Riots (July 13 – 16th, 1863) which severely limited the carbine’s reach in the war, making it one of the rarest firearms of the Civil War period. They are known to have been issued to the 10th Missouri Cavalry as well as the 13th & 16th New York.

The Gibbs design features a lever to give access to the chamber for loading and reloading. The barrel tilted upward and forward to provide access and a cartridge in .52 caliber would be inserted. This carbine is a single shot design and used a percussion cap to ignite the propellant charge contained inside the cartridge. Like many other weapons from this period, the Gibbs Carbine used a single piece wooden stock that incorporated the shoulder stock as well as a short fore end.

The overall condition is nearing fine. Nice patina. Excellent action. Markings are clear and legible. This example sports a solid stock with average handling wear, dents and dings. A sliver of the forend has two cracks just in front of the lever hinge. The bore is mostly bright, only dimming at the muzzle, with serviceable rifling. Here is an opportunity to fill a key niche in your Civil War Carbine collection!
