Cavalry Carbine Converted to 50-70 GOVT
Here we present an antique Sharps New Model Carbine, made circa 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier.
This specimen is an example of a saddle ring carbine that was converted on contract after the Civil War to fire the improved metallic cartridge, the 50-70 Govt. The barrel is an example of the sleeved, 3-groove rifled type. The sling ring bar has been deleted, a not uncommon modification. The Lawrence Pellet Priming Device and the lever retention latch have also been removed. A brass blade front sight was added.
The metal surfaces have been refinished. Some of the markings have been obliterated. The walnut stock is in very good condition. The bore is excellent. The action is strong.

Barrel is 22 inches in length.
