AWESOME EARLY & RARE CONDITION SMITH CIVIL WAR CARBINE
Description: A Very nice example of the .50 caliber Smith Cavalry Carbine. This Smith’s Patent Carbine carries a three-digit serial number that reflect an early birth at the American Machine Works factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Smith’s Patent Carbine, as a single shot, breech loading, percussion .50 caliber, was one of the most important Federal Cavalry carbines of the Civil War. Production of these carbines was almost entirely consumed by government contracts. A total of approximately 30,362 Smith Carbines were purchased by the United States during the Civil War which makes this beauty a remarkable find being made so early and still in wonderful condition today. Presenting THE SMITH CIVIL WAR CARBINE BY AMERICAN MACHINE WORKS: Serial #969, .50 cal., 21 5/8” part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this attractive carbine have aged to a very handsome Patina with some expected military marks as this beauty is / was a Genuine Battlefield weapon one of the first manufactured and put into service right away. The original buttplate has toned to a pretty brown and yes there are some original case-hardened colors in the protected areas of the hammer. All metal markings are intact and strong and the American black walnut stock and forend rate very good. There is a “JH” inspector cartouche on the left side wrist, the sling bar with ring and the original sights are intact with the brass front sight blade having been regulated during the period of use and the action is strong and crisp. This is our 59th yr in business and this serial number is by far the lowest we have encountered, a wonderful Legacy Piece that won't send you to the poor house and will make your Heirs very thankful. Smith carbines saw extensive service with the following cavalry regiments: 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 1st Connecticut, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.
