FIRST MODEL 54 CALIBER MERRILL CARBINE
The Merrill was an early Civil War carbine. This one is in standard configuration with a 22 inch barrel chambered in 54 caliber. Has brass patchbox and buttplate. Merrill's have a unique lever activated breech that is marked "J.H MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858". Breech has "7655". Lock is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858 / APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61". Lock is marked "7382". Even though serial numbers do not match the gun appears to have been in this configuration since the war. Metal is a mix of brown/gray patina. Brass has dark mustard patina. Stock is sound & solid with numerous dings. Mechanically functional with a dark bore. This is a real piece of Civil War history.
