Gwyn & Campbell Carbine Type II--Civil War
Description: Gwyn & Campbell Carbine Type II, .52 caliber, percussion cap priming system, 19-inch barrel, 39 inches long (total), 6.5 pounds, and a 600-yard sight Serial no. 2081. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured around 8,200 of the Type I and Type II carbines in 1863 and 1864, and the carbines were primarily issued to a variety of Midwestern units during the Civil War. "UNION/RIFLE" marked on right of frame, lock marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT/1862/HAMILTON. O", very crisp inspector cartouches "WHR" (William H. Russell) and "RKW" (which I believe may actually be "RKA" for Remick K. Arnold) stamped on the left wrist. Matching, all sharp serial numbers (4 total) on the bottom of the barrel, frame, breech block and lever. This carbine is sometimes referred to as the “Union Carbine” or “Grapevine Carbine". Many calvary regiments were issued the Gwyn and Campbell, including the 2nd and 3rd Arkansas; 5th, 6th and 16th Illinois; 3rd and 4th Indiana; 4th and 8th Iowa; 2nd, 6th and 14th Kansas; 10th, 12th, 14th and 40th Kentucky; 4th and 8th Missouri; 5th and 8th Ohio; 7th Tennessee; and the 3rd Wisconsin. Features include iron mountings, blue/casehardened frame, lock, and hammer. This gun: Wood has numerous scratches/dents showing hard war use. Metal has brown patina with virtually no pitting. Markings are sharp. Mechanics are excellent. NOTE: The saddle bar and ring were removed long ago, as evidenced in the photos, with old riveting in place. Overall in Very Good condition as to appearance and Excellent as to mechanics. A nice example of this important CW carbine. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .52 |
