RARE Antique OPEN BREECH “1862” Rifle by HOLDEN
Description: RARE Antique OPEN BREECH “1862” Rifle by HOLDEN 1 of Less Than 200 Produced; Made for .44 Henry Rimfire! Here we present an antique Iron Frame C.B. Holden 1862 Patent Open Frame Rifle, manufactured circa 1862-1870. Only 200 of these rifles are believed to have been produced. Holden was a former employee of Frank Wesson, one of the brothers of the more famous Daniel Wesson who co-founded Smith & Wesson with Horace Smith. He and Wesson shot at their local competitive rifle club together and Holden was a foreman for a time. He is known for several very distinct and unique rifle designs, each as rare as the others! This one features a single shot design with an open frame. It was very simple with only two major moving parts, each with a finger hole. To make ready, pull the hammer to the rear, release the breech block by pulling the lever down about ½-inch, then pull the finger loop on the breech block, insert cartridge and close the breech and close the lever. This would have seemed quite a slow procedure when one considers that the Spencer Repeater was new on the market and was tube fed with a capacity of seven, but then again, the American military adopted a number of equally interesting single shot weapons during this time. The top of the octagonal barrel is marked “HOLDEN’S PATENT/APRIL 1862”. The rear sight is a military-style long-range leaf. The sling swivel bears a saddle ring. Though a little slow, this rifle is short and light, making it quite handy to carry along. The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are covered in a smooth, light patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid with normal handling. The bore is in good shape with clear rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a true rarity and one might even say an oddity! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .44 Henry Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2200 #6403 SOLD Antique: Yes |
